talking to your child about SYNERA

Every child's personality and past experience with needle procedures is different. And as the parent, you know your child best. However, experts agree that the following may help:

Discussion
Only you can decide how much information is appropriate for your child. Use neutral words when talking about the procedure. Instead of "stick" or "poke," say the nurse will "slide" or "insert" the needle in. Try not to talk about your own dislike of needles, as this could upset your child. Be truthful, but in general, the younger your child, the simpler the answers should be. Too much detail can do more harm than good. Finally, let your child know that you will be with him or her the entire time. Knowing they won't be alone during the procedure can help put them at ease.

A calm parent
Children are keen observers and sensitive to their parents' moods. Focus on staying calm and relaxed to help your child feel the same way.

A calm environment
If possible, keep your child in a quiet area away from other children who might be in distress.

Distraction
Anything that keeps your child's mind off what is about to happen can help before, during, and after the procedure: squeezing a favorite toy, video games, telling a story, drawing, or coloring. You might suggest that your child draw a picture to give to the nurse when he or she returns. You can then discuss the picture while the nurse performs the procedure.
