The American Academy of Pediatrics believes that controlling children’s pain is important—even with IVs and when taking blood. They recommend that a numbing medicine be applied to the skin before a child receives a needle procedure. One numbing medicine option is SYNERA®.

SYNERA: for elss 'ouch' with needle procedures

SYNERA® is designed to numb only the area where a needle will be used
SYNERA® (Sin-era) looks like a bandage but is actually a patch filled with numbing medicine that helps reduce or even prevent the pain of needle sticks associated with blood draws, inserting IV lines, and minor skin surgery procedures. SYNERA® should not be used on broken skin. The numbing medicine used in the patch is a combination of lidocaine and tetracaine. The SYNERA® patch is latex free. It has a unique heating pod inside that very gently warms the area where it’s applied to help the numbing medicine penetrate the skin. Make sure the holes on the patch are not covered by clothing. This could cause the patch not to heat properly, and SYNERA® may not be as effective.

SYNERA® takes 20 to 30 minutes
The nurse or doctor will remove the patch after about 20 to 30 minutes (the time it takes for SYNERA® to achieve its full effect). By the time SYNERA® is removed, the skin should be numb and ready for the needle procedure.

SYNERA® prevented pain in more children
In a scientific study, many children (59%) said they had no pain at all when SYNERA® was used before an IV procedure. In another study, when parents observed their child having an IV, 90% said that their child had no pain or slight pain based on their child’s behavior.
